Unequaled Power

It wasn’t fair and balanced. Nobody accused Jesus but the tension was thick. The whole story is in the Gospel of John chapter nine. A blind man had just been healed and his sight was restored one-hundred-percent! A man who had been born blind! This had never happened before in the history of the world. And the entire episode took place on a Sabbath Day! The religious leaders could have people “stoned to death” for working on a Sabbath Day.

The religious Pharisees asked the man born blind exactly what happen. The man told them exactly what happened and how it happened. The Pharisees weighed in on what Jesus did saying, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” Others said, “How can a sinner do such miraculous signs?” The ‘enlightened ones’ were divided among themselves.

It just wasn’t fair and balanced. Jesus healed a blind man on the Sabbath without asking the Pharisees permission or approval! The Pharisees were distrusted and looked on with suspicion by the common people, while Jesus was gaining in popularity and reputation. The Pharisees had the power to excommunicate this blind man and his parents from worship and fellowship from the synagogue. All Jesus could offer the poor blind beggar was his sight, a renewed life and eternity with his Creator. Where was the balance?  Where was the fairness?

Something the Pharisees said was a real head-scratcher; they said, “We know this man is a sinner.” The healed blind man gave the best answer in return (probably ever). He said to the Pharisees, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” The Pharisees brought the man in to be questioned a second time. After a few condescending questions, the man realized they weren’t amazed, they were angered. He asked them, “Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?” Guess what they did: they hurled insults at him and said, “How dare you lecture us!” The man refused to be coerced away from the plain fact he had been cured. Stick with the balanced Truth.
