Who's In Charge of the Keys?

You can give a baby shiny car keys to play with, but are they in charge? They maybe ‘In possession’ of the keys, but they are not ‘In Charge’. Being “in charge” is more of a legal term signifying authority. You’ve seen crime dramas on TV, where an official looking person walks up, looks at the crime scene, and asks the question, “Who’s in charge here?” What they are asking exactly is: who is in “Possession of Authority” here.
At one point, in Matthew 10, Jesus gave the Apostles “authority”, to perform various miracles. He could not give them the authority, unless he had the “Authority” to dish it out. All four Gospel writers mention that Jesus, “Taught as one having authority”. Jesus was in possession of authority from the Heavenly realm.
Revelation 1:18 tells us Jesus holds the keys of death and Hades! Those keys show the authority of Christ over physical death and the place that temporarily holds the immaterial part of the unbeliever until judgment day! Revelation 21:1 tells us Jesus holds the key to the abyss; Satan’s resting place for a thousand years! To all who believe in Christ and obey him, the Kingdom doors are open.
Bottom line: For those who worry: don’t-- the keys to the Kingdom are in good hands.

Giving to Charity

Giving to Charity
Give
You have been solicited by someone at sometime asking for something to help someone in need. The sales pitch is given in a straightforward manner with all the integrity and honesty the solicitor can deliver. The request may be to help the homeless, a children’s home, a pet’s shelter, a fundraiser for police or firefighters widows, a wounded veterans program, or it may be to fight some notorious disease that has claimed millions of lives. All causes, all deserving support. Your next decision is who’s using the money for the greatest good?
Doesn’t the Bible say that charity begins at home? Not in so many words, but it does say that we are to be discerning about who we support with our monies. Some charities spend 80 to 90% of the total money they raise to throw parties, hire staff, and send out promotional materials to…you guessed it, raise more money! Millions of dollars are raised, but only a small percentage goes to help the intended parties. Wasteful, deceitful, disgraceful—yes. Would you care to be in their shoes come Judgment Day?
How are we to help all those suffering people? Do we ignore their pleas? Do we sell everything we have and give it all away? Where is that happy middle ground? Giving away money and hoping it will be used wisely is irresponsible. There are questions to be asked and answered truthfully. A charity or foundation should strive to open their records/books for public scrutiny. They should be able to prove that the money you donate to help the needy in any/all areas do exactly that.
Churches used to help those in need. In this present day, the government helps those supposedly in need. One was helped by charitable giving. One is now helped by the tax you are forced to pay without accountability. God loves a cheerful giver, but God also demands an accounting of our time, our talents and our treasure. Maybe we could follow the teachings of the Bible. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you!

Last One Standing

Last one standing
The Book of Revelation in the Bible needs some clear definition. First of all…it is what it is…A Revelation of Jesus Christ (or Apocalypse) to John, to be written down. It is expected to be understood. Much of it is frighteningly clear. Some symbols are explained, others are not. The general theme given to John is divided into three parts. John is instructed to write: (1) What he has seen, (2) What he is now seeing, (3) What will take place.
The number seven plays a critical role in Revelation.
popsicleseven There are seven letters addressed to the seven churches in Asia Minor. There is a seven year period of terrible suffering and tribulation coming. There are seven lamps sitting before the Throne of God—Blazing. There’s a lamb with seven horns, and seven eyes. There’s a leopard-like beast with seven heads. There’s a scarlet-colored beast with seven heads. In the Book of Revelation, there are seven seals, seven trumpets, seven vials, seven candlesticks, seven stars, seven angels, seven Spirits, seven thunders, and seven mountains. The Bible begins with seven days of creation and ends with a book of sevens! Reading the Book of Revelation will take you about an hour or so. Studying the Book of Revelation could well take the better part of a lifetime. Be prepared, don’t be the last one standing when the first trumpet sounds. Bottom Line Just as God finished the work of creation (Genesis 2:1-3) and Jesus finished the work of redemption (John 19:30), so the Trinity will finish the entire plan of salvation by inviting the redeemed into a new creation. Heaven is a prepared place for a prepared people.

Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend?

Diamonds are a Girls best friend
Who said that? Is it true? Depends on who you ask doesn’t it? Or does it depend on the size of the diamonds? Do zirconium’s count? Can diamonds replace best friends (humans)? What kind of person puts people above gems, anyway? A famous saying usually brings to mind a famous person.
Diamonds
Who said: “Let ‘em eat cake!” Who said: “We have peace in our time!” Who said: “God is dead!” Who said: “I am not a crook!” Who said: “I did not have sex with that woman!” Considering all the circumstances, do you see a pattern? See any arrogance? See any pride? Marie Antoinette, Chamberlin, Nietzsche, Richard Nixon, and Billy Clinton all had something in common—an overdose of hubris. John Newton (author of Amazing Grace) once said: “I am not what I hope to be, I am not what I desire to be, but by the grace of God, I am not what I once was!” Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend; but best friends sometimes disappoint. Famous people full of pride will always say things that come back to bit them; hubris destroys to the utmost. Only God’s son, Jesus Christ, is everyone’s hope and best friend for eternal life—if, they are a believer. For those who do not believe, judgment won’t be so friendly. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow!
Who said “No one takes my life from me, but I lay it down on my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my father!” Jesus said that in John 10:13 Now, that’s a gem of a statement. Jesus’ death and resurrection, as part of God’s plan for the salvation of the world, was under God’s full control.

Tempus Fugit

Tempus Fugit
When you look at history, in retrospect the Romans were correct: time flies! Sometimes it’s hard to wait for an appointed time. Kids anxiously count the days before their birthday, Christmas or summer vacation. Adults have the same problem; it’s difficult to wait for that raise, promotion, that cruise, or the mechanic to finish working on your car. One man in the Bible waited patiently and was richly rewarded with the gift of a lifetime.

Simeon was a righteous and devout man who lived in Jerusalem. It was revealed to him, that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah, or as the Bible puts it, “The consolation of Israel”. (Luke 2:25) When Joseph and Mary brought the baby Jesus to the Temple, Simeon got to hold him and offered thanks to God for His promise. Then something unusual happened, Simeon told Mary, “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel. And a sword will pierce your own soul, too.” Luke 2-34:35. Joseph and Mary were so excited and at the same time wondering what he meant.

As time goes by
Mary would come to know exactly what Simeon meant thirty plus years later. As time goes by, we all come to realize how things change, in us and around us. Mary lived to see something no mother should have to: a dying child. We know time flees, are we doing what the Bible suggests? In 1 Corinthians chapter 7 Paul urges all believers to make the most of their time before Christ’s return. Every person in every generation should have this urgency about telling the good news to others.

Bottom line
1 Corinthians 7-29 & 31 “What I mean, brothers, is that the time is short. For this world in its present form is passing away”

Seeing Clearly For the Second Time

Seeing Clearly for the Second time
The Passover in Jerusalem was over. People had come from many countries to participate in the annual event. But something about the Passover was different; this year those despicable Romans were at it again, they had crucified three men on the eve of Passover, the High Holy Day of the Jewish nation!

The priests were dressed and ready for the procession of sacrifices to be offered. The vendors in the Temple courtyard were doing a brisk business exchanging money and selling animals to be sacrificed to the guests coming from out of town. All the rooms at the inns were full and more people kept pouring into the city. This Passover had both an air of excitement, and a sense of foreboding.

The Passover came and went.

Three days after the Passover, two men were leaving the city of Jerusalem. They were traveling on the road to Emmaus, when they were joined by a third man. Together the three men discussed what had happened in Jerusalem. The third man explained that everything that happened had been foretold by the prophets. When they reached the town of Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, they sat down to eat. The third man revealed himself to the other two. It was Jesus! Then the two men recognized Jesus and they rushed back to Jerusalem. Finding the eleven Apostles, they told of meeting Jesus and how they saw clearly, prophecy fulfilled before their eyes!
Twin TV's
“When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” Luke 24:30-32
Indeed their hearts were being fed.

Nest Building--For the Birds?

NestChicks in a nest

Do you know who teaches the bird to build a nest? I mean, after all, that baby bird wasn’t around when mom and dad built the nest to cradle those fragile eggs; where did the know-how come from? How did that baby bird know how things got done? You’ve read that fish travel in schools, but where do birds go to get instructions on nest-building? Where is this “higher” education we’ve all heard about? Do you know any college professor who specializes in teaching construction techniques on building nests in trees, barns, on gutters, beneath deck rafters, in bushes? Who teaches a bird about engineering dynamics and statics? Will a bird hatched in an incubator, who has never seen a nest, be able to build a perfectly good nest by its kind? Can mature adult birds be assured that their offspring will be able to follow in their footsteps? The answer is—yes! No wonder Job’s pride was humbled when God said to him, “Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom and spread his wings toward the south? Does the eagle soar at your command and make her nest on high”? Job 39:26-27 The tiny bird learns from a mighty God! How marvelous are thy works, O God!
Bottom Line

In Matthew chapter 10 Jesus said that God is aware of everything that happens even to the sparrows, and you are far more valuable to him than they are. You are so valuable that God gave his only Son to die for you. John 3:16

Leadership Courage and Hope

leadership
In his first statement as Prime Minister to the House of Commons (13 May 1940) Sir Winston S. Churchill said, “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat. Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory there is no survival.” In a speech on Dunkirk before the House of Commons (4 June 1940) he said; “We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, and we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength. We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We will never surrender.” In a separate speech, he said: “If the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say: ‘This was their finest hour.’” He visited the barracks of his soldiers to give support and courage. Those brave and inspiring words were said only 70 years ago. Churchill lived in violent times. Great words from great men never go out of style. There was another who inspired Leadership, Courage and Hope: a man…from Nazareth.
the cross
Jesus was also a historical figure who lived in violent times. He made compassionate speeches and motivated people to do well. He sacrificed blood, toil, tears, and sweat for his people. He offered a bit more: grace, mercy, miracles, messages and gave his life to not just his people, but, to all people. He offered a way to The Father and heaven. He had no country boundaries. Jesus was at war, too, with the Jewish leaders, Pontius Pilot, Roman politicians, and Rome. In the soldiers barracks in Rome they called Jesus’ walk to Golgotha the “Dance of Death.” On his way to the cross, “for you”, he was scourged, spat upon, beaten, mocked and many other adjectives. The bystanders hurled insults, the crowds yelled "Crucify him", the Jewish leaders screamed "blasphemer", the soldiers shouted "Let your God save you now".  "For you" he endured this.  Most do not realize it, but Jesus was practically beaten to death before the cross. The Bible says, pieces of flesh were ripped away, obviously where bones and organs were exposed. This was much more than scourged. Then, after all that, they nailed him on a cross which cut off his breathing, speared him so the rest of life poured out, killed him, stripped him of his clothing, and then laughed at him. "For you" he endured this.  Oh yes, did I forget to mention that before he died that he ask The Father, “Forgive them for they know not what they do.”?

By contrast, the criminal on the other side of Jesus looked at him and said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." By all appearances, the kingdom was finished. How awe-inspiring is the faith of this man who alone saw beyond the present shame to the coming glory! Jesus forgave his murderers. Could you?

For Whom The Bell Tolls

Bells Toll
BellsErnest Hemingway, adventurer/author wrote that novel in 1939. It’s about the lives of 15 people, for four days, during the Spanish American War. It’s a tragedy. ALL his works are tragedies. He saw life as futile. His heroic characters were preoccupied with death. His worldview was fatalistic. FYI—his father was a physician and his mother was devoutly religious. Hemingway saw the destruction World War 1 caused and thought Christianity and its values had failed Mankind. He and other writers sought a new system of values. Hemingway had the concept, “when you’re dead, that’s it, you’re dead”,
nothing more, no afterlife, just live for the moment. Are you a Hemingway fan? He felt life is everything, death is nothing. WE KNOW DIFFERENTLY! We know that death is a portal to heaven or hell. Hemingway’s view was askew: apparently he never accepted his mother’s point of view. We know of a death that gives us everlasting life. For your information Hemingway’s father died by suicide. What kind of doctor and healer does this? In 1962 Hemingway attempted suicide…it worked! He never did accept Christ. ‘Our worldview’? We seek the second coming!

Life is short no matter how many years we live. But to have such a fatalist attitude and belief is sad. Don’t be deceived into thinking that you have lots of remaining time to live for Christ, to enjoy your loved ones, your work, your family, your friends, or to do what you know you should. Live for God today and everyday! Then, no matter when your life ends, you will have fulfilled God’s plan for you.

How's Your Hearing?

Hearing new
When someone whispers, we listen intently. When Jesus spoke in the Scriptures, did they hear His message? Were they listening to see if His words affected them? In John 10, the Jews asked Jesus, “How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly”. Jesus answered them, “I told you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep”. Did you hear the past tense of His statement? I’ve already told you again and again! You heard me, but you refused to believe me! Well, which was it? Were they hearing? Were they listening?

Just two verses later the mystery is solved and revealed to us…

Jesus tells them: “My sheep hear my voice; and I know them, and they follow me”. This lays the matter to rest. Did you hear that? His sheep hear His voice! Now, how’s your hearing? Are you tuned in? Are you listening?

Bottom Line

Many people that ask for proof do so for the wrong reasons. Most of these questioners didn’t want to follow Jesus in the way that he wanted to lead them.

Left Handed Beans?

Beans
pole beans
Many of you grew up on a farm or worked on a farm when you were younger. It is a self-sustaining livelihood. It is hard demanding work and admirable. Not one you can easily fit into your back pocket. Many of you have a garden where you grow tomatoes, corn, lettuce, cucumbers, squash, melons and beans. Have you ever checked your climbing beans up close? I mean really taken a look? Did you notice they are left-handed! Huh? That’s right! They grow up the pole from left to right. Not convinced, go see for yourself. Nature has an instinct all its own. Men don’t understand it, but God made it that way. No professor, no horticulturalists, no farmer can explain it, no wise man can deny it, and any honest man will admit only God could do it.

Nature can teach us a thing or two if we look closely. Did you realize oranges, grapefruit, and lemons all have an even number of sections or segments? Ever notice that watermelons that show stripes always show an even number? The cob of corn has an even number of rows. Each stalk of wheat bears an even number of rows. Each stalk of wheat bears an even number of grains. This is true of rye, oats, and barley. Is there a connection when the Lord said that the harvest gathered would be “thirtyfold, sixtyfold, and a hundred”??? The Master Harvester knew from the start WHO, what, when, where, why and how to harvest.

“Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God and there is none like me."

God is unique in his knowledge and in his control of the earth, people and all else—including the future. Go ahead and plant your crops, your plants, your seeds but don’t forget what Jesus said in the parable of the weeds in Matthew.

“The one who sowed the good seed stands for the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the Kingdom.” Matthew 13:37

Want more? Read all about it in Matthew 13:24-43. You will grow from your studies.

Which Cookie Has Your Fortune?

Crystal balls, Ouija boards, star charts, tarot cards, seances, fortune tellers, where do you go when you need to know about the future? Can horoscopes be trusted? Need a little help discerning the future? Don’t forget about the newspaper ladies Dear Abby and Ask Ann Landers, then there's a gentleman they call Dr. Phil. What about those fortune cookies that usually guides you in matters of health, wealth, and love. When they’re cracked open, they give you a deep personal advice like: Plant your corn early, or Expect a surprise this month! You can take that to the bank and deposit it in your strongbox. Let’s not forget the sweet taste of that cookie.
What exactly is our fascination with the unknown, the future, the beyond? Palm readers, fortune tellers, astrologists, personal gurus and their types are eager to smooth talk you into what you want to hear, and what you want to happen, while at the same time gently making your pocketbook lighter. The Bible has some constructive criticism about looking into matters that should best be left alone.

“Do not practice divination or sorcery.” Leviticus 19:26

“Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God, for you will be defiled by them.” Leviticus 19:31

But it’s only a little harmless you say. It’s all in jest; it’s just a way to lighten things up from being too serious. We only go on a few times a year. What harm is it causing? After all, many presidents and first ladies practice with mediums. We all get a good laugh, nobody takes it serious. Why are you being so judgmental, we’re not hurting anyone? It’s just fun. People use these and a thousand other excuses to dabble in the black arts, and you say, just because Hitler constantly consulted a medium and other forms of the dark side and was one of the most evil murderous men ever, it’s not the same thing! God didn’t say, that he preferred we steer clear, God said; “Don’t!” But what about my favorite programs on TV that show ghosts and spirits and haunted houses and crossing over to the other side? That’s okay isn’t it? How could that be wrong? Hollywood wouldn’t lead us astray, would they? It’s just entertainment right? Maybe, God needs to send ‘another’ fortune cookie your way! Perhaps it should read, “I will put my trust in him.” Hebrews 2:13

Life In Distress

life in distress pic and titlePicture if you will, a country with a massive army and a massive navy, biggest and best, nothing to equal their strength or fierceness, everything simply gargantuan in quantity, reputation, and agility. Unless you have unlimited volunteers, this scale of operation takes a mountain of money to maintain. In fact, to continue to be the biggest and the best, it requires—no, it forcefully demands—a constant infusion of money 24/7, “big money”. Please witness the Roman Empire at its zenith in a land called Palestine.

Every country the Romans annexed was a base of operations for collecting taxes. Lots and lots of taxes. Can you imagine everyone’s delight in paying taxes to support an invading army that would in turn make your life miserable? Failure to pay your unfair share of taxes was not an option. Money was forcibly donated by Jewish volunteers to keep the Roman juggernaut alive and healthy. As more occupation was enabled, more money was required. Since the Romans used Jewish tax collectors, can you imagine how popular they became with their fellow citizens? Where exactly did all the money go you ask? I’m glad you asked. More soldiers, more swords, more chariots, more militia, more jails, more angst. I bet you thought the taxes were going to rebuild the roads, repair bridges, better quality water, improved sanitary conditions, more food, better education and all those other things we think taxes should pay for.

Highly Uncommon Threads

Uncommon threads
FootballSports are a multi-multi-multi-billion dollar industry. How do we know that? For starters, every newspaper in the country has its own section devoted to sports. Every news program has a rundown on the day’s sports. Every cable network has 24/7 programming dedicated to sports. There is a proliferation of magazines dedicated to your favorite sport. Sport memorabilia is a multi-billion dollar industry that grows exponentially every year. Ninety-nine percent of colleges and universities in this country are known for their sports teams instead of their educational prowess. Academics appear to be on a distant horizon. Then there’s betting, bookies, wagering, let’s not get too close to that monster. The whole world is intoxicated with sports fever.

Monies float over-the-table, under-the-table, out-of-thin-air and many sports figures spend much of their time in prison, courtrooms, rehabilitation centers and other recovery areas as they do on their court, in their field or at their arena. Sports lawyers, recruiting agents, contract experts, medical teams and many, many others jockey for their portion. There’s always a new multi-million dollar facility being proposed or built somewhere and fan wear is an absolute necessity. The whole world is intoxicated with sports fever.

All Points Bulletin

All Points Bulletin
When the police are searching for someone of interest, they issue an A.P.B... This designation stands for an All-Points-Bulletin. This means that they share all the information they have on the person of interest with other law enforcement agencies in the hopes of casting a wider net to apprehend the person(s) as soon as possible. The A.P.B. also often includes a description of the person of interests clothing, make and model of vehicle, other accomplices, distinguishing marks, race, height, weight, hair color, prior criminal record , whether or not they’re armed and dangerous, and other descriptions.

Jesus was watched intently as he started his ministry. People were suspicious of his actions, his motives, and his clever wit. As long as he didn’t threaten the Romans, they ignored him. The Pharisees and the Sadducees however were openly opposed and constantly seeking to discredit him and elevate themselves. The common people saw Jesus for exactly who he was. He was someone who empathized with their condition. He brought them relief through healing, gave them hope for tomorrow, and taught them about the kingdom of God. Something the religious leaders of the day miserably failed to do. Why were the religious authorities APB’ing Jesus?

What Is Change?

What is Change
Cents left over from a purchase? Is change something that evolves and can be measured? We are all chameleons, and our personalities change. I’d like to think that some things never change like the voice of forest water running in the night, the crisp hard rattle and popping of fresh raked graves on a farm road, the crickets sound in the meadow at dusk, the delicate innocent voice’s of children, the sounds of laughter that is a universal language without words and I am sure you can finish the list. Our days are like a kaleidoscope—they change every instant. New harmonies, new combinations, new contrasts of every sort are abound. Nothing ever happens twice alike. None of us know when the next change might be, what unexpected opportunity is just around the corner. Webster’s defines change as: to become different, to alter, vary, to undergo alteration or replace. Change can be also a painful process in relationships and romance. We are all too familiar with those. Since changes are going on any way, the best thing is to learn enough about them so that we will be able to grasp them and try and turn them into the direction of our desires. Can we do this? Sometimes, and at others, probably not.

Ever ponder that God is immutable? Immutability meaning; that which does not change. It is one attribute which distinguishes God from all His creatures and all His creation. God is perpetually the same; not subject to change in His being. His attributes or His purposes. Because God has no beginning and no ending. He can know no change. Let’s look at some “bible verses” that support these facts. James 1:17 says that God is everlasting who "does not change like shifting shadows", He does not change! God is immutable in His attributes, the qualities that make up His very being. He is "Semper idem", always the same. Isn’t that comforting? Indeed. His Word is “forever settled in heaven” Psalm 119:89. God is immutable in His essence; His nature and being are infinite and not subject to any mutations. God has "Neither" evolved, grown, nor improved. “I the Lord do not change”. Malachi 3:6 God is immutable in His counsel. The “gospel” is clear: “The counsel of the Lord standeth forever”. Psalm 33:11 More? Read Isaiah 46:10
Bottom Line

Where is God? He is right by your side, completely trustworthy. His intentions never change. Never!

He Sugar Coat Coated It Again

He Sugar Coated It Again
Frozen fast food

Everybody that loves sugar, please raise your hand with the fat fingers. Processed food is high on the list of favorites for the morbidly obese and not only for the morbidly obese but also for the “intentionally” obese. Fresh fruits and vegetables can’t hold a ‘vanilla cinnamon’ scented candle to foods that are processed with high-fructose corn syrup. Obesity-related symptoms like type 2 diabetes and heart disease are on the short list for the leading causes of preventable death.

We crave the tasty stuff that’s high in fat and sugar. And guess what—that’s the stuff that’s killing us! If the food you love is “processed” beware, if it has fiber and is “unprocessed” you’re good2go! In other words, if it comes in God’s packaging it’s good period, like: bananas in their own peel, apples in their own skin, nuts in their own shells, corn in its own husk, melons in their own rind, those many berries and the food list is long.

But let’s face facts; our willpower is not our strongest suit. We gravitate towards what we desire instead of what we know to be healthy for us. Food is the most common item we make daily errors in judgment on, but it’s not the most important. We are creatures of habit, and habits are like concrete shoes. What about the “real” issues of life, do we engage them?

After Jesus was baptized he secluded himself in the desert and spent the next forty days fasting. During this time Jesus was tempted by the devil. At the end of this period Jesus was hungry. “The devil said to him, ‘if you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.’ Jesus answered, “It is written; Man does not live by bread alone.” Luke 4 The second temptation was the devil offering Jesus, ‘all the kingdoms of the world!’ Jesus told the devil, “It is written: “Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’” Luke 4 The third temptation was the devil trying to test God. Jesus simply answered, “It is written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Luke 4

Do you see a pattern here? When Jesus was tempted, each time his response was—“It is written!” The devil gained nothing, and the Word of the Lord rebuked his advances. The devil doesn’t say ‘You won’t surely die’ anymore, but he does sugar coat it saying ‘You won’t surely go to hell’. When you are tempted, do you quote Scripture? Could you quote Scripture? Need help? Start here!

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you O Lord”. Psalm 199:11

“All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work”. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
“For the word of God is living and active” Hebrews 4:12

“Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should”. Ephesians 6:19-20

Born Again

Born Again
Doctors
Who doesn’t feel a bit excited when someone announces the birth of a baby? After all, it’s a miracle in and of itself. You’re witnessing a tiny person who’s breathing on their own and experiencing life anew for the very first time. The miracle of birth is awesome to behold and be a part of. You should be aware that not all births occur in a hospital, not all births involve a mid-wife, not all births are allowed to become life and not all births involve that first breath of life!

The Bible mentions two births between its covers. The first is a woman that carries a baby for nine months within her womb and gives birth to a child. The second type of birth is first mentioned by Jesus himself. The “Gospel” of John records the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, a member of the Sanhedrin (the Jewish ruling counsel). Nicodemus represented the aristocratic, well-intentioned but unenlightened Judaism of the day.

Nicodemus came to see Jesus at night to discuss the role Jesus was stepping into. Nicodemus felt that Jesus needed some investigating. Jesus sees that Nicodemus is seeking information earnestly, so he gets straight to the point. “I tell you the truth; no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” John 3:3 The next few “Bible verses”, Jesus discusses this “New Birth” and poor Nicodemus, with all his intellect and ecclesiastical knowledge, doesn’t grasp it immediately. Hearing it for the very first time, who could? Nicodemus grasps it later.

Being born again means literally, “from above” (see scriptures John 3:31 and John 19:11) It also means “again”. Both ideas—being born from above and being born again were merged in John’s gospel. They are combined in the translation “be born anew”. The new birth or regeneration, (see scripture Titus 3:5) is the act of God that gives eternal life to the one who believes in “Christ”. As a result, he becomes a member of God’s family, (see scripture 1 Peter 1:23) with a new capacity and desire to please his heavenly Father. “Therefore, if anyone is in “Christ”, he is a new creation, the old has gone and the new has come!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 God gives you a fresh new start. Do you grasp it?

“Christians” who are “born again” become brand-new people on the inside. The “Holy Spirit” transforms us and gives new life, and they are not the same anymore. We are not reformed, rehabilitated, or reincarnated—we are recreated “born again”, living in a vital union with “Christ”. God brings us back to himself (reconciles us) by blotting out all our sins and making us righteous.

Expecting Trouble?

Expecting Trouble

There is no doubt in people’s minds, the number of violent crimes involving guns are increasing. When the terrible Columbine High School incident, in Littleton, Colorado on April 20, 1999 killed 15 and injured 24, people went into a form of shock and haven’t fully exited. The incident at a movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado, on June 20, 2012 that killed 12 and injured 59 stains our conscience. There remain abundant unanswered questions.

GunThe loss of innocent life is both shocking and unexplained. Psychologists will remind us that when someone does something seemingly unthinkable, don’t expect a rational explanation. There might not be one. Don’t expect that even when all the logistics are worked out that somehow, you can make sense of this idiocy.

If only someone could have seen this trouble coming and prepared us. Maybe then we could accept the fact that trouble is expected. When the facts or reason fail to give us comfort and answers, maybe we should put intellectual curiosity on the back burner and step into the realm of faith. If only there was some precedent. Wait—doesn’t the Bible say something about trouble to come?

The “gospel” of Matthew 6:34 says: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own”. Planning for tomorrow is time well spent, no doubt, worrying about tomorrow is time wasted. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell the difference. Careful planning is thinking about goals, steps, and schedules, and trusting God’s guidance. When well done, planning can help alleviate worry.

The “gospel” of John 16:33 says: “In this world you will have trouble”. The key here is “will have”. Not maybe, not perhaps, but will! With these words “Christ” told his disciples to take courage. In spite of the inevitable struggles they would face (we all face), they would not be alone.

Goodness GRACEous!

Goodness Graceous
The Old and New Testament never mention grace in connection with mankind in general. The grace of God is directed toward the elect. Abraham Booth defined grace as, “The eternal and absolute free favour of God, manifested in the vouchsaferment of spiritual and eternal blessings to the guilty and unworthy”. Grace is the “unearned” and “undeserved” favor of God towards man through Jesus Christ. Grace can’t be bought, earned, or won. It comes to us as pure charity, unasked, and undesired. Romans 11:6 makes the distinction that grace and works are in direct opposition. God answered, “I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal so too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. And if by grace, then it is no longer by works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace”. Do you think it’s easier for God to love you when you’re good? Do you secretly suspect that God chose you because you deserved it? Do you think some people’s behavior is so bad that God couldn’t possibly save them? If you ever think this way, you don’t understand that salvation is by grace, a free gift. It cannot be garnered, in whole or part; it can only be accepted with thankfulness and praise.

Ephesians 2:8-9 says “We are saved by grace through faith, not of works!” Grace is eternal, it is free, and it is sovereign. Grace is no ordinary or typical gift. We become Christians through God’s unmerited grace, not as the result of any effort, ability, intelligent choice, or act of service on our part. Distinguishing grace was in the Old Testament; it shows that Abraham we selected and called “the friend of God”. “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ”. John 1:17

Do you recognize the name John Newton? He was a minister (1725-1807) who wrote a new religious hymn every week for his prayer meeting services. They were written as poetry and were not put to music until later. Newton once said, “Our righteousness is in Him, and our hope depends not upon the exercise of grace in us but, upon the fullness of grace and love in Him, and upon His obedience unto death”. He also wrote a little tune that you might have sang in church. It goes something like this:
Grace
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me.... I once was lost but now am found, Was blind, but now, I see. T'was Grace that taught... my heart to fear. And Grace, my fears relieved. How precious did that Grace appear... the hour I first believed. Through many dangers, toils and snares... we have already come. T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far... and Grace will lead us home. The Lord has promised good to me... His word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be... as long as life endures. When we've been here ten thousand years... bright shining as the sun. We've no less days to sing God's praise... then when we've first begun. Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me.... I once was lost but now am found, Was blind, but now, I see.

Free on Your Own Recognizance?

Free on your own Recognizance
Who do you know personally that has an addiction? Before you answer, let’s define what an addiction is. Mr. Webster says that an addiction is when someone devotes themselves or gives oneself habitually or compulsively to something. Now here is the point where you better know what “habitually” and “compulsively” means! Not 100% sure? Consult Mr. Webster again.

When we think of an addiction, we think of being addicted to caffeine or alcohol or drugs. Schools now open. Fact—you can be addicted to almost anything. Surprised? Disappointed? Are you nodding your head to agree?

Fact—Getting addicted to something harmful doesn’t happen overnight.

Fact—Getting over a dangerous addiction doesn’t happen overnight.

Fact—Getting treatment, interventions and medicines for addictions doesn’t mean you’re cured.

Tired of constructive criticism from well-meaning friends and brimstone preachers? Want some friendly advice from an expert that pertains directly to your personal well-being? If not, you can head for the liquor cabinet, pour yourself a tall one, pop an oxy, shoot up a stream of any various poisons, smoke or sniff "it" and chill out for the rest of the day. If you’re interested, listen carefully. Jesus spoke to those who believed in His mission and His work carefully. Bible verses in Romans 12:2, informs us: “Don’t be conformed to this world”.

What did Jesus mean by this? He meant simply, don’t live according to the “style and manner” of this present age. Scripture is very specific. How many of you are habitually or compulsively addicted to cable television? You say, so what? I enjoy cable and the enormity of a thousand channels and unlimited movies and unrestricted talk shows and the comedy selections, and the sports programs, and the political news programs, and more. Question—Are you handcuffed to being entertained and pandered to? Let’s be brutally honest here. Time is one commodity that God has given us as a measure of control over. Show God you can be responsible with what He’s given you. Addictions are overcome every day. Just ask, “Help me God” to discern my time. Get addicted to things in the bible: ”bible verses”, “Christ”, “church”, “prayer” the “gospel”.

“Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart”. Psalm 37:4

As Time Approaches

As Time Approaches
As with any baby he came with cries and tiny wrinkles. He entered this sinful world wrapped in cloth, and took his first nap on straw in a stable. Subject to time and his parents, he grew to manhood in Rome-occupied Palestine. Working in Joseph’s woodworking shop his hands became skilled, calloused and strong. Later, he walked and traveled through the countryside and city, teaching, touching lives, preaching to crowds, and training 12 special men to carry on his work. At every turn he was hounded by many who would seek to rid the world of his influence and message. After many messages and miracles he was finally accused and tried unjustly and condemned to a disgraceful, unmerciful, painful, execution by foreign hands. Ridiculed, spat upon, cursed, beaten to the bone, pierced by nails, and hung heavenward for all to deride. Jesus, the God-man, gave his life all completely so that all might live. We all need to know Him as time approaches.

Clock
When God decides at His appointed time, the risen and ascended Lord Jesus will burst onto the world scene. Everyone will know that Jesus is Lord of the universe! We who love him will rejoice and bow down greeting our Savior with hearts overflowing into songs of praise. However, his enemies will be wrought and filled with fear. Satan and his followers, and enemies of Christ will gather their legions against Christ and his armies. But who can withstand God’s wrath? No one, nothing! “Christ” will win the battle and reign victorious forever! Jesus, our humbling long-suffering Servant, is also the powerful, conquering King and Judge. Are you ready for judgment—to see the King, as time approaches?

Be forewarned! He is coming. Revelation a book of hope, written by the apostle John, an eyewitness to Jesus, proclaimed that the victorious Lord would surely return to vindicate the righteous and judge the wicked. But Revelation is also a book of warning. Things were not as they should have been in the churches, so Christ called the members to commit themselves to live in righteousness. Although Jesus gave this revelation to John over 2,000 years ago, it still stands as a comfort to God’s people today. We can all take heart as we understand John’s vision of hope—Jesus will return and settle accounts with all who defy him as time approaches.

Do you see that revelation is the final concluding book of the Scriptures? Please read these “biblical scriptures”. It will unfold all the great events that will bring history to consummation. This includes the revelation of Jesus Christ at His second advent. Revelation will show Christ revealed in full Glory, in contrast to the four Gospels, where He was presented in simple humility. Do you see Christ presented as the Ruler of the kings of the earth, the Bridegroom and Head of the Church, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, The Lamb that was slain, the High Priest, the King and Judge? Do you see that starting in Revelation chapter 4, the book presents future events? When you read Revelation, remember these two verses: ”It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent to heaven. Even angels long to look into these things”. 1 Peter 1:12 “And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as a light shinning in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origins in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit”. 2 Peter 1:19-21
